Juanjo Domínguez (born October 23, 1951 in Junín) is a classical guitarist and important interpreter of Argentine music, especially tango. In 2005 he was awarded the Konex Award for best instrumental single artist of popular music
Through the history of the genre there were other great players who, differently to Grela, formally studied their instruments and achieved further musical knowledge, such were the cases of Mario Pardo, Horacio Pettorossi, José María Aguilar, Edmundo Rivero, Aníbal Arias or Osvaldo Avena. But he belonged to the group of guitarists that played by ear, and who polished their craft by daily performing at stints, improving their skills by their own talent and through the contact with other musicians. He was in the group of the self-taught artists like: Guillermo Barbieri, Manuel Parada, Rafael Iriarte and Rosendo Pesoa.
Many criticize his use of the pick or plectrum. But who cares about that, if his sound was unique, brings us pleasure and, like no other, touches our spirit.
Gitarist Kay Sleking speelt tango in uiteenlopende formaties. Hij treedt op als solist en als begeleider in een ensemble of in een compleet orkest. Bijzonder puur klinkt de tango als Sleking solo speelt. Maar ook in combinatie met een bandoneonist, violist, pianist, contrabassist of een zanger klinkt zijn tango prachtig melancholiek.
Naast gitaar speelt Sleking ook contrabas in verschillende formaties.
Concertzalen en festivals
Sinds begin jaren negentig treedt Sleking met verschillende musici op in concertzalen in binnen- en buitenland. Hij was onder meer te horen in Het Concertgebouw en De Kleine Komedie in Amsterdam, en in de Rotterdamse Doelen. Hij speelde op het Ullapool Guitar Festival in Schotland, het Healdsburg Guitar Festival in San Francisco en het Festival de Fénétrange in Frankrijk.
Samenwerkingen
Sleking speelde in de tangoformatie Marlous Lazal Y Che Tango, met onder anderen bandoneonist Alfredo Marcucci en bassist Luc van Gestel. Met bandoneonist Leo Vervelde en bassist Sanne van Delft trad hij op in tangotrio Otros Tiempos. In 2005 nam Sleking het initiatief voor het gitaartrio Guitarras Tango, dat zich toelegt op traditionele tangomuziek. Guitarras Tango treedt op in binnen- en buitenland. Sleking speelt in meer tangoformaties.
